Last week, Governor JB Pritzker officially signed the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act (SB 1950), also known as Deb’s Law. With this historic action, Illinois becomes the first Midwest state to enact a medical aid in dying law. The law goes into effect in September 2026.

It’s important that we recognize and celebrate public officials who listen to patients, honor the courage it takes to share these deeply personal stories, and respect the tireless advocacy that made this victory possible.
